Job description

We are commissioning a marine archaeology team to conduct a detailed exploration and documentation of a historic shipwreck located off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. Preliminary surveys have identified the wreck as a World War II–era vessel lying at a depth of approximately 55 meters. The project’s purpose is to preserve cultural heritage through detailed mapping, documentation, and artifact recovery under professional archaeological protocols. The scope of work includes:
  • Conducting baseline surveys using ROVs and divers to capture the wreck’s overall condition.
  • Creating 3D photogrammetry models of the site for historical preservation and research use.
  • Performing detailed artifact recovery operations, focusing on smaller items that are at risk of deterioration.
  • Documenting the site with HD photography and 4K video footage for educational and archival purposes.
  • Preparing a comprehensive archaeological report that includes mapping, cataloging of finds, and conservation recommendations.
This project requires collaboration between divers, archaeologists, ROV pilots, and imaging specialists. Providers must demonstrate expertise in working with heritage sites and follow strict ethical guidelines for artifact handling and cultural sensitivity.Deliverables must include:
  • A 3D digital model of the wreck site.
  • A catalog of all artifacts documented and/or recovered.
  • Photographic and video archives of the exploration.
  • A final report suitable for submission to heritage authorities and academic institutions.
The wreck lies in waters that are both ecologically and historically significant, and all operations must balance exploration with preservation. Providers are expected to minimize disruption to the site and coordinate with local authorities for permitting and conservation protocols. This project represents a rare opportunity to contribute to the preservation of underwater cultural heritage in Japan, bringing together archaeology, marine technology, and history. Selected providers will play a vital role in safeguarding this heritage while generating valuable records for future generations.
