Job description

We are commissioning an underwater filming and photography team to document the kelp forest ecosystems along California’s Pacific Coast, with a primary focus on the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The footage will be used in an upcoming documentary highlighting the role of kelp forests as one of the ocean’s most productive and biodiverse ecosystems.The scope of work includes:
  • Capturing high-definition cinematic footage of kelp forests, associated marine species, and ecological interactions.
  • Conducting macro photography of key organisms such as invertebrates, fish species, and kelp structures to showcase biodiversity.
  • Recording time-lapse sequences of tidal and current-driven changes within the kelp forest environment.
  • Filming scientific interviews and fieldwork documentation to integrate expert commentary with visual storytelling.
  • Delivering footage in 4K and 8K formats, along with raw image files and properly logged metadata for editorial use.
This project requires a team of 4 highly skilled professionals, including underwater cinematographers, drone operators, lighting specialists, and safety divers. Providers must demonstrate prior experience working in challenging coastal environments with variable currents and visibility. Strong safety protocols, especially for dive operations, are mandatory.Deliverables must include:
  • A curated library of 4K/8K video clips and high-resolution still images.
  • Underwater interview footage with synchronized audio.
  • At least 10 time-lapse sequences.
  • A final visual package with detailed shot lists, captions, and credits.
Environmental sensitivity is a priority, and all filming activities must comply with sanctuary regulations to avoid damaging fragile habitats. Providers must operate with minimal disturbance to marine wildlife and adhere to ethical wildlife filming guidelines.This project represents an opportunity for professional underwater media specialists to contribute to a documentary aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of kelp forests in climate resilience and ocean health.
