Hydrographic Survey & Seabed Mapping – German North Sea

  • Posted 6 months ago
  • Lower Saxony, Germany

Job description

Germany’s offshore development plans are expanding rapidly, with the North Sea playing a central role in shipping, wind energy, and resource management. Strategic projects of this scale require precise seabed knowledge, not just for construction but for long-term environmental planning and compliance. To support these efforts, a full hydrographic survey campaign is now required along the German North Sea corridor near Wilhelmshaven. The project involves multi-disciplinary survey operations across approximately 120 square kilometers of seabed. Service providers will be expected to deploy advanced survey platforms and deliver accurate datasets for planners, regulators, and offshore operators. The scope of work includes:
  • Deploying multibeam and side-scan sonar systems to generate high-resolution bathymetric maps.
  • Conducting sub-bottom profiling to understand sediment layers and geological stability.
  • Capturing current, tidal, and sediment transport data to model risks for future offshore installations.
  • Executing environmental baseline assessments, including water quality testing and biological habitat mapping.
  • Delivering integrated GIS datasets and 3D seabed visualizations suitable for planning and regulatory use.
Up to 7 expert providers will be required, covering hydrographic technicians, sonar operators, GIS specialists, oceanographers, and reporting staff. Providers must demonstrate prior experience in large-scale surveys exceeding $500,000 in contract value and a proven track record with offshore clients in the North Sea or similar environments.Deliverables must include:
  • A high-resolution bathymetric map library with supporting metadata.
  • Annotated GIS layers of environmental, geological, and hydrographic features.
  • 3D visualizations of the surveyed corridor.
  • A comprehensive survey report aligned with EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive requirements.
Strict environmental protocols will apply, ensuring that survey activities are carried out responsibly and with minimal ecological disturbance. Coordination with German port authorities and offshore energy regulators will also be necessary to schedule survey activities around heavy shipping traffic. This project is both high-value and high-visibility. Providers who deliver successfully will have their work underpin critical German offshore initiatives, contributing to the next generation of marine energy and infrastructure projects in Northern Europe.
